Impala Mine in North West, South Africa, was the largest platinum-producing mine in the world, producing approximately 696.4 thousand ounces of platinum and an estimated 8.46 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Impala Mine is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd, and is due to operate until 2035. The second largest platinum-producing mine with an estimated platinum production of 565.8 thousand ounces and an estimated 10 mmtpa of ROM, was the Marikana Mine (Lonmin) located in North West, South Africa. The Marikana Mine (Lonmin) is owned by Sibanye Stillwater Ltd, and is due to operate until 2036.
Amandelbult Mine located in Limpopo, South Africa was the third-largest mine, the Mogalakwena Mine located in Limpopo, South Africa was the fourth-largest mine, and the Rustenburg Complex located in North West, South Africa was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated platinum production of 410.9 thousand ounces, 407.4 thousand ounces and 383.4 thousand ounces, respectively, in 2021. The Amandelbult Mine, the Mogalakwena Mine and the Rustenburg Complex had an estimated ROM production of 6.17 mmtpa, 11.95 mmtpa and 2.53 mmtpa respectively. The Amandelbult Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc which is due to operate until 2040, the Mogalakwena Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc which is due to operate until 2040 and the Rustenburg Complex is owned by Sibanye Stillwater Ltd which is due to operate until 2040.
The five largest platinum mines, i.e., Impala Mine, Marikana Mine (Lonmin), Amandelbult Mine, Mogalakwena Mine, and Rustenburg Complex, cumulatively produced approximately 2,463.9 thousand ounces of platinum, 39.11 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
