Serra Norte Mining Complex in Para, Brazil, was the largest surface iron ore-producing mine in the world, producing approximately 109.3 million tonnes of iron ore and an estimated 110.27 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Serra Norte Mining Complex is owned by Vale SA, and is due to operate until 2038. The second largest surface iron ore-producing mine with an estimated production of 80.7 million tonnes of iron ore and an estimated 60.2 mmtpa of ROM in 2021, was the Yandi Mine located in Western Australia, Brazil. The Yandi Mine is owned by BHP, and is due to operate until 2023.
Mount Whaleback Mine located in Western Australia, Australia was the third-largest mine, the Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project located in Para, Brazil was the fourth-largest mine, and the Jimblebar Hub located in Western Australia, Australia was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated iron ore production of 74.4 million tonnes, 73.7 million tonnes and 67.4 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Mount Whaleback Mine, the Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project and the Jimblebar Hub had an estimated ROM production of 88.8 mmtpa, 88.29 mmtpa and 67.15 mmtpa respectively. The Mount Whaleback Mine is owned by BHP which is due to operate until 2036, the Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project is owned by Vale SA which is due to operate until 2062 and the Jimblebar Hub is owned by BHP which is due to operate until 2060.
The five largest iron ore mines, i.e., Serra Norte Mining Complex, Yandi Mine, Mount Whaleback Mine, Carajas Serra Sul S11D Project, and Jimblebar Hub, cumulatively produced approximately 405.5 million tonnes of iron ore, 414.71 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
