Mount Cattlin Lithium Mine in Western Australia, Australia, was the largest surface lithium-producing mine in the world, producing approximately 1,340 thousand tonnes of lithium and an estimated 1.8 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Mount Cattlin Lithium Mine is owned by Galaxy Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2025. The second largest surface lithium-producing mine with an estimated production of 752.4 thousand tonnes of lithium and an estimated 0.99 mmtpa of ROM in 2021, was the Mibra Mine located in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Mibra Mine is owned by Advanced Metallurgical Group NV, and is due to operate until 2034.
Mount Marion Lithium Project located in Western Australia, Australia was the third-largest mine, the Pilgangoora Project located in Western Australia, Australia was the fourth-largest mine, and the Bald Hill Lithium and Tantalum Project located in Western Australia, Australia was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated lithium production of 485 thousand tonnes, 457.3 thousand tonnes and 274.6 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Mount Marion Lithium Project, the Pilgangoora Project and the Bald Hill Lithium and Tantalum Project had an estimated ROM production of 2.47 mmtpa, 2.1 mmtpa and 0.36 mmtpa respectively. The Mount Marion Lithium Project is owned by Mineral Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2047, the Pilgangoora Project is owned by Pilbara Minerals Ltd which is due to operate until 2060 and the Bald Hill Lithium and Tantalum Project is owned by Alita Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2027.
The five largest lithium mines, i.e., Mount Cattlin Lithium Mine, Mibra Mine, Mount Marion Lithium Project, Pilgangoora Project, and Bald Hill Lithium and Tantalum Project, cumulatively produced approximately 3,309.3 thousand tonnes of lithium, 7.72 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
