Millennium Oil Sands Project in Alberta, Canada, was the largest surface-producing mine in the world, producing approximately 260.32 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Millennium Oil Sands Project is owned by Suncor Energy Inc, and is due to operate until 2034. The second largest surface-producing mine with an estimated 204.01 mmtpa of ROM, was the Horizon Project located in Alberta, Canada. The Horizon Project is owned by Canadian Natural Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2068.
Morenci Mine located in Arizona, United States was the third-largest mine, the Cerro Verde Mine located in Arequipa, Peru was the fourth-largest mine, and the Steepbank Project located in Alberta, Canada was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 169.45 mmtpa, 162.25 mmtpa and 153.04 mmtpa, respectively,in 2021. The Morenci Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc;Sumitomo Corp;Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd which is due to operate until 2045, the Cerro Verde Mine is owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd;Sumitomo Corp;Compania De Minas Buenaventura SAA;Freeport-McMoRan Inc which is due to operate until 2052 and the Steepbank Project is owned by Suncor Energy Inc.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Millennium Oil Sands Project, Horizon Project, Morenci Mine, Cerro Verde Mine, and Steepbank Project, cumulatively produced approximately 331.7 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
