Rampura Agucha Mine in Rajasthan, was the largest underground mine in India, producing approximately 3.86 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced zinc (395.64 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Rampura Agucha Mine is owned by Government of India;Vedanta Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2028. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 3.24 mmtpa of ROM, was the Jhanjra Mines located in West Bengal. The Jhanjra Mines is owned by Coal India Ltd, and is due to operate until 2040.
Sindesar Khurd Mine located in Rajasthan was the third-largest mine, the Zawar Mine located in Rajasthan was the fourth-largest mine, and the Adriyala Shaft Project located in Telangana was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 2.96 mmtpa, 2.72 mmtpa and 2.13 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Sindesar Khurd Mine is owned by Government of India;Vedanta Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2031, the Zawar Mine is owned by Government of India;Vedanta Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2030 and the Adriyala Shaft Project is owned by Singareni Collieries Co Ltd which is due to operate until 2042.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Rampura Agucha Mine, Jhanjra Mines, Sindesar Khurd Mine, Zawar Mine, and Adriyala Shaft Project, cumulatively produced approximately 14.91 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
