Grasberg Block Cave Mine in Papua, was the largest copper-producing mine in Indonesia, producing approximately 295.5 thousand tonnes of copper and an estimated 26.4 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Grasberg Block Cave Mine is owned by PT Inalum, and is due to operate until 2041. The second largest copper-producing mine with an estimated copper production of 242.7 thousand tonnes and an estimated 21.66 mmtpa of ROM, was the Deep Mill Level Zone Mine located in Papua. The Deep Mill Level Zone Mine is owned by PT Inalum, and is due to operate until 2041.
Batu Hijau Mine located in West Nusa Tenggara was the third-largest mine, the Wetar Copper Project located in Maluku was the fourth-largest mine, and the Deep Ore Zone Underground Mine located in Papua was the fifth-largest mine, with a total copper production of 84.8 thousand tonnes, 38.8 thousand tonnes and 36.4 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Batu Hijau Mine, the Wetar Copper Project and the Deep Ore Zone Underground Mine had an estimated ROM production of 8.62 mmtpa, 1.3 mmtpa and 3.25 mmtpa respectively. The Batu Hijau Mine is owned by PT Amman Mineral Internasional which is due to operate until 2031, the Wetar Copper Project is owned by Finders Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2024 and the Deep Ore Zone Underground Mine is owned by PT Inalum which is due to operate until 2023.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Grasberg Block Cave Mine, Deep Mill Level Zone Mine, Batu Hijau Mine, Wetar Copper Project, and Deep Ore Zone Underground Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 698.2 thousand tonnes of copper, 61.19 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
