Indonesia: Five Largest Surface and Underground Mines in 2021

  • Ombilin Mine in West Sumatra, was the largest surface and underground mine in Indonesia, producing approximately 0.89 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Ombilin Mine is owned by PT Bukit Asam (Persero) Tbk. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 0.35 mmtpa of ROM, was the GDM Coal Mine located in East Kalimantan. The GDM Coal Mine is owned by PT Gerbang Daya Mandiri, and is due to operate until 2034.

  • Talang Santo Gold Mine located in South Sumatra was the third-largest mine, the Way Linggo Mine located in South Sumatra was the fourth-largest mine, and the Ciemas Gold Project located in West Java was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.08 mmtpa, 0.04 mmtpa and 0.03 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Talang Santo Gold Mine produced approximately 118.39 thousand ounces of silver, the Way Linggo Mine produced approximately 60.46 thousand ounces of silver, and the Ciemas Gold Project produced approximately 11.21 thousand ounces of silver in the year 2021. The Talang Santo Gold Mine is owned by Kingsrose Mining Ltd, the Way Linggo Mine is owned by Kingsrose Mining Ltd and the Ciemas Gold Project is owned by Wilton Resources Corporation Limited which is due to operate until 2028.

  • The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., Ombilin Mine, GDM Coal Mine, Talang Santo Gold Mine, Way Linggo Mine, and Ciemas Gold Project, cumulatively produced approximately 1.39 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
