Sangatta Mine in East Kalimantan, was the largest surface mine in Indonesia, producing approximately 51.4 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Sangatta Mine is owned by The Tata Power Co Ltd;PT Bumi Resources Tbk;Mountain Netherlands Investment BV. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 35.18 mmtpa of ROM, was the Pasir Mine located in East Kalimantan. The Pasir Mine is owned by PT Indika Energy Tbk;ST International Corp.
Kusan Mine located in South Kalimantan was the third-largest mine, the FTB Project located in East Kalimantan was the fourth-largest mine, and the Tutupan Mine located in South Kalimantan was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 33.11 mmtpa, 31.11 mmtpa and 26.07 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Kusan Mine is owned by GMR Coal Resources Pte Limited;PT Dian Swastatika Sentosa Tbk;Sinar Mas, the FTB Project is owned by PT Bayan Resources Tbk which is due to operate until 2056 and the Tutupan Mine is owned by PT Adaro Energy Tbk;Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Sangatta Mine, Pasir Mine, Kusan Mine, FTB Project, and Tutupan Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 176.87 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
