Grasberg Block Cave Mine in Papua, was the largest underground mine in Indonesia, producing approximately 26.36 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (295.47 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Grasberg Block Cave Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc;PT Inalum, and is due to operate until 2042. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 21.66 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (242.73 thousand tonnes), was the Deep Mill Level Zone Mine located in Papua. The Deep Mill Level Zone Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc;PT Inalum, and is due to operate until 2042.
Deep Ore Zone Underground Mine located in Papua was the third-largest mine, the Big Gossan Underground Mine located in Papua was the fourth-largest mine, and the PT Angsana Jaya Energi Coal Mine located in South Kalimantan was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 3.25 mmtpa, 2.8 mmtpa and 0.56 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Deep Ore Zone Underground Mine is owned by PT Inalum;Freeport-McMoRan Inc which is due to operate until 2024, the Big Gossan Underground Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc;PT Inalum which is due to operate until 2042 and the PT Angsana Jaya Energi Coal Mine is owned by PT Angsana Jaya Energi.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Grasberg Block Cave Mine, Deep Mill Level Zone Mine, Deep Ore Zone Underground Mine, Big Gossan Underground Mine, and PT Angsana Jaya Energi Coal Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 55.18 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
