Cerro Verde Mine in Arequipa, was the largest mine in Peru, producing approximately 162.25 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (402.34 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Cerro Verde Mine is owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd;Sumitomo Corp;Compania De Minas Buenaventura SAA;Freeport-McMoRan Inc, and is due to operate until 2052. The second largest mine with approximately 59.88 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (383.64 thousand tonnes), was the Las Bambas Project located in Apurimac. The Las Bambas Project is owned by GUOXIN International Investment Corporation Limited;China Minmetals Corp;CITIC Group Corp, and is due to operate until 2039.
Antamina Mine located in Ancash was the third-largest mine, the Antapaccay Mine located in Cusco was the fourth-largest mine, and the Toquepala Mine located in Tacna was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 55.63 mmtpa, 38.45 mmtpa and 38.16 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Antamina Mine produced approximately 430 thousand tonnes of zinc, the Antapaccay Mine produced approximately 197 thousand tonnes of copper and the Toquepala Mine produced approximately 231 thousand tonnes of copper in the year 2021. The Antamina Mine is owned by Teck Resources Ltd;Glencore Plc;Mitsubishi Corp;BHP which is due to operate until 2029, the Antapaccay Mine is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2032 and the Toquepala Mine is owned by Grupo Mexico SAB de CV which is due to operate until 2050.
The five largest mines, i.e., Cerro Verde Mine, Las Bambas Project, Antamina Mine, Antapaccay Mine, and Toquepala Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 354.37 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
