La Zanja Mine in Cajamarca, was the largest surface and underground mine in Peru, producing approximately 1.78 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced silver (95.43 thousand ounces) in 2021. The La Zanja Mine is owned by Compania De Minas Buenaventura SAA;Newmont Corp. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 1.76 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing silver (19.81 thousand tonnes), was the Atacocha Mine located in Pasco. The Atacocha Mine is owned by Votorantim SA, and is due to operate until 2026.
Huanzala Mine located in Ancash was the third-largest mine, the Alpamarca Mine located in Junin was the fourth-largest mine, and the Catalina Huanca Mine located in Ayacucho was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 1.64 mmtpa, 1 mmtpa and 0.43 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Huanzala Mine produced approximately 30.06 thousand tonnes of zinc, the Alpamarca Mine produced approximately 9.1 thousand tonnes of zinc, and the Catalina Huanca Mine produced approximately 28.5 thousand tonnes of zinc in the year 2021. The Huanzala Mine is owned by Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co Ltd, the Alpamarca Mine is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2023 and the Catalina Huanca Mine is owned by Trafigura Group Pte Ltd which is due to operate until 2027.
The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., La Zanja Mine, Atacocha Mine, Huanzala Mine, Alpamarca Mine, and Catalina Huanca Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 6.61 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
