Retamas Mine in La Libertad, was the largest underground mine in Peru, producing approximately 8.28 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced gold (165.7 thousand ounces) in 2021. The Retamas Mine is owned by Minera Aurifera Retamas S.A.. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 6.87 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing gold (116.7 thousand tonnes), was the Cerro Lindo Mine located in Ica. The Cerro Lindo Mine is owned by Votorantim SA, and is due to operate until 2030.
Marcapunta Norte Mine located in Pasco was the third-largest mine, the El Porvenir Mine located in Pasco was the fourth-largest mine, and the Animon Mine located in Pasco was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 2.18 mmtpa, 2.05 mmtpa and 1.7 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Marcapunta Norte Mine produced approximately 33.99 thousand tonnes of copper, the El Porvenir Mine produced approximately 52.97 thousand tonnes of zinc, and the Animon Mine produced approximately 41.79 thousand tonnes of zinc in the year 2021. The Marcapunta Norte Mine is owned by Compania De Minas Buenaventura SAA, the El Porvenir Mine is owned by Votorantim SA which is due to operate until 2028 and the Animon Mine is owned by Volcan Compania Minera SAA.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Retamas Mine, Cerro Lindo Mine, Marcapunta Norte Mine, El Porvenir Mine, and Animon Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 21.08 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
