Cerro Verde Mine in Arequipa, Peru, was the largest mine in South and Central America region, producing approximately 162.25 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (402.34 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Cerro Verde Mine is owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd;Sumitomo Corp;Compania De Minas Buenaventura SAA;Freeport-McMoRan Inc, and is due to operate until 2052. The second largest mine with an estimated 141.81 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (1,010.8 thousand tonnes), was the Escondida Mine located in Antofagasta, Chile. The Escondida Mine is owned by JECO Corporation;BHP;Rio Tinto, and is due to operate until 2079.
