South and Central America: Five Largest Surface and Underground Mines in 2021

  • Andina Mine in Valparaiso, Chile, was the largest surface and underground mine in South and Central America, producing approximately 31.2 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (195.29 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Andina Mine is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile, and is due to operate until 2060. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 23.75 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (151.72 thousand tonnes), was the Candelaria Mine located in Atacama, Chile. The Candelaria Mine is owned by Sumitomo Corp;Lundin Mining Corp;Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd, and is due to operate until 2041.

  • Salvador Mines located in Atacama, Chile was the third-largest mine, the Dolores Mine located in Chihuahua, Mexico was the fourth-largest mine, and the Micare Mine located in Coahuila, Mexico was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 10.8 mmtpa, 7.96 mmtpa and 6.67 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Salvador Mines is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile which is due to operate until 2065, the Dolores Mine is owned by Pan American Silver Corp which is due to operate until 2026 and the Micare Mine is owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico SAB de CV.

  • The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., Andina Mine, Candelaria Mine, Salvador Mines, Dolores Mine, and Micare Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 80.38 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
