Sorgun Lignite Field Mine in Yozgat, was the largest surface and underground mine in Turkey, producing approximately 6.72 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Sorgun Lignite Field Mine is owned by Karma Madencilik Insaat Sanayi ve Tic. A.S.. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 3.57 mmtpa of ROM, was the Tuncbilek Mine located in Kutahya. The Tuncbilek Mine is owned by Turkish Coal Enterprises.
Artvin Murgul Mine located in Artvin was the third-largest mine, the Cukuralan Mine located in Izmir was the fourth-largest mine, and the Mentes Mine located in Kayseri was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 2.21 mmtpa, 0.86 mmtpa and 0.45 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Artvin Murgul Mine is owned by Cengiz Holding AS, the Cukuralan Mine is owned by Koza Altin Isletmeleri AS and the Mentes Mine is owned by Ozkoyuncu Madencilik.
The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., Sorgun Lignite Field Mine, Tuncbilek Mine, Artvin Murgul Mine, Cukuralan Mine, and Mentes Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 13.79 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
