Havran Project in Balikesir, was the largest surface mine in Turkey, producing approximately 14.16 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (41.12 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Havran Project is owned by Ozdogan Construction & Trade Co. Sti., and is due to operate until 2027. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 12.97 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (187.84 thousand ounces), was the Kisladag Mine located in Usak. The Kisladag Mine is owned by Eldorado Gold Corp, and is due to operate until 2035.
Afsin Elbistan Mine located in Kahramanmaras was the third-largest mine, the Gumuskoy Mine located in Kutahya was the fourth-largest mine, and the Sivas Kangal Coal Mine located in Sivas was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 6.93 mmtpa, 6.41 mmtpa and 5.63 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Afsin Elbistan Mine is owned by Elektrik Uretim AS, the Gumuskoy Mine is owned by Yildizlar SSS Holding A.S. and the Sivas Kangal Coal Mine is owned by Koc Holding AS.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Havran Project, Kisladag Mine, Afsin Elbistan Mine, Gumuskoy Mine, and Sivas Kangal Coal Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 46.11 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
