Cao Son (GD-I, GD-II) Mine in Quang Ninh, was the largest surface mine in Vietnam, producing approximately 2.8 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Cao Son (GD-I, GD-II) Mine is owned by Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Ltd. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 2.15 mmtpa of ROM, was the Coc Sau (OC) Mine located in Quang Ninh. The Coc Sau (OC) Mine is owned by Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Ltd.
Deo Nai (GD I) Mine located in Quang Ninh was the third-largest mine, the Ha Tu Mine located in Quang Ninh was the fourth-largest mine, and the Sin Quyen Mine located in Lao Cai was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 2.07 mmtpa, 1.63 mmtpa and 1.17 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Deo Nai (GD I) Mine is owned by Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Ltd, the Ha Tu Mine is owned by Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Ltd and the Sin Quyen Mine is owned by Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Ltd which is due to operate until 2041.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Cao Son (GD-I, GD-II) Mine, Coc Sau (OC) Mine, Deo Nai (GD I) Mine, Ha Tu Mine, and Sin Quyen Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 9.83 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
