Impact of COVID-19 on Global lead mining
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), global lead reserves held a significant position as of January 2021. Of this, Australia, China, Russia, Peru and Mexico accounted for a majority of the share. These were followed by Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Bolivia and Sweden.
Global lead mine production declined in 2020, primarily due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the temporary suspension of several mines, including Raura, Uchucchacua, Milpo No.1 and Atacocha, and the El Porvenir, Bismark and Francisco I. Madero, Antamina, Aguilar and Tara mines. In addition, mine-specific issues such as a pit failure at Vedanta’s Skorpion mine, a breakdown in the ore conveyor belt at the Boliden’s Tara mine and an illegal blockade at Americas Gold and Silver Corp.’s San Rafael mine further disrupted lead mine production.
Global lead trade
China is the world’s largest importer of lead in 2020, however, imports were down in 2020. South Korea ranks second in the total lead ore and concentrates imports in 2020. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, South Korea imported a significant share of lead ore and concentrates, which was up in comparison to the previous year. Peru, Russia, Australia and the US are the world’s top exporters of lead.
