Zimbabwe: Five Largest Mines in 2021

  • Zimplats Mine in Mashonaland West, was the largest mine in Zimbabwe, producing approximately 7.21 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced nickel (4.93 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Zimplats Mine is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd, and is due to operate until 2059. The second largest mine with approximately 2.53 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing nickel (3.2 thousand tonnes), was the Mimosa Mine located in Midlands. The Mimosa Mine is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd;Sibanye Stillwater Ltd, and is due to operate until 2033.

  • Chiredzi Mine located in Masvingo was the third-largest mine, the 3 Main Mine located in Matabeleland North was the fourth-largest mine, and the Unki Mine located in Midlands was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 2.43 mmtpa, 2.41 mmtpa and 2.18 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Chiredzi Mine is owned by Steelmakers Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd, the 3 Main Mine is owned by Mittal Steel African Investments;Government of Zimbabwe;National Social Security Authority;London Register;Messina Investments Pty Ltd which is due to operate until 2028 and the Unki Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc which is due to operate until 2042.

  • The five largest mines, i.e., Zimplats Mine, Mimosa Mine, Chiredzi Mine, 3 Main Mine, and Unki Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 16.76 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
