Zimplats Mine in Mashonaland West, was the largest underground mine in Zimbabwe, producing approximately 7.21 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced nickel (4.93 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Zimplats Mine is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd, and is due to operate until 2059. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 2.53 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing nickel (3.2 thousand tonnes), was the Mimosa Mine located in Midlands. The Mimosa Mine is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd;Sibanye Stillwater Ltd, and is due to operate until 2033.
3 Main Mine located in Matabeleland North was the third-largest mine, the Unki Mine located in Midlands was the fourth-largest mine, and the Mupfuti Mine located in Mashonaland West was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 2.41 mmtpa, 2.18 mmtpa and 2.12 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The 3 Main Mine is owned by Mittal Steel African Investments;Government of Zimbabwe;National Social Security Authority;London Register;Messina Investments Pty Ltd which is due to operate until 2028, the Unki Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc which is due to operate until 2042 and the Mupfuti Mine is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd which is due to operate until 2028.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Zimplats Mine, Mimosa Mine, 3 Main Mine, Unki Mine, and Mupfuti Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 16.45 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
