Zimbabwe: Five Largest Surface and Underground Mines in 2021

  • Entuba Coal Mine in Matabeleland North, was the largest surface and underground mine in Zimbabwe, producing approximately 1.72 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Entuba Coal Mine is owned by Makomo Resources (PVT) Ltd, and is due to operate until 2046. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 1.26 mmtpa of ROM, was the Chaba Mine located in Matabeleland North. The Chaba Mine is owned by London Register;Messina Investments Pty Ltd;Mittal Steel African Investments;Government of Zimbabwe;National Social Security Authority, and is due to operate until 2054.

  • Pickstone-Peerless Project located in Mashonaland East was the third-largest mine, the RHA Project located in Matabeleland North was the fourth-largest mine, and the Turk and Angelus Mine located in Mashonaland West was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.21 mmtpa, 0.18 mmtpa and 0.14 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Pickstone-Peerless Project produced approximately 13.3 thousand ounces of gold, the RHA Project produced approximately 2.87 thousand tonnes of tungsten, and the Turk and Angelus Mine produced approximately 14.34 thousand ounces of gold in the year 2021. The Pickstone-Peerless Project is owned by Padenga Holdings Limited which is due to operate until 2032, the RHA Project is owned by National Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Fund;Premier African Minerals Ltd which is due to operate until 2023 and the Turk and Angelus Mine is owned by New Dawn Mining Corp which is due to operate until 2034.

  • The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., Entuba Coal Mine, Chaba Mine, Pickstone-Peerless Project, RHA Project, and Turk and Angelus Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 3.52 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
