Zimbabwe: Five Largest Surface Mines in 2021

  • Chiredzi Mine in Masvingo, was the largest surface mine in Zimbabwe, producing approximately 2.43 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Chiredzi Mine is owned by Steelmakers Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 1.76 mmtpa of ROM, was the Limpopo Coal Mine located in Matabeleland South. The Limpopo Coal Mine is owned by Senzile Resources (Pty) Ltd, and is due to operate until 2059.

  • Tuli Coal Mine located in Matabeleland South was the third-largest mine, the Murowa Mine located in Midlands was the fourth-largest mine, and the Dodge Mine located in Mashonaland Central was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 1.05 mmtpa, 0.84 mmtpa and 0.69 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Tuli Coal Mine is owned by Senzile Resources (Pty) Ltd, the Murowa Mine is owned by RioZim Ltd and the Dodge Mine is owned by Raptor Resources Holdings Inc..

  • The five largest surface mines, i.e., Chiredzi Mine, Limpopo Coal Mine, Tuli Coal Mine, Murowa Mine, and Dodge Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 6.77 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
