Amazon: Racial Diversity in the Leadership in 2021

  • In 2021, the representation of Asian employees in Amazon in the US was 13.2%, a decrease of 0.4 percentage points over 2020
  • Black employees represented 5.5% and Hispanic & Latinx employees at 4.5% at senior levels in Amazon’s US office in 2021

Diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) in an organization help bring unique perspectives and ideas to create more innovative, productive, and resilient enterprises. It also contributes to equality of opportunity and treatment in the workplace at all stages of the employment relationship, including recruitment, retention, promotion, remuneration, and access to training and skills development.

Increasing global awareness that all workers have a right to a dignified and respectful workplace irrespective of their sexual orientation and ethnicity, helps to promote an open and inclusive workplace. However, labor market disruption due to the COVID-19 has had devastating consequences globally.

Top technology companies are focusing on racial equity and working towards lifting underrepresented groups such as Asians, Blacks, and Hispanics. Apple committed an additional $30 million to its Racial Equity and Justice Initiative in August 2021. Microsoft plans to double the number of Black and African American people managers, senior individual contributors, and senior leaders in the US by 2025.

However, the number of executives from underrepresented groups remains remarkably low in major technology companies.

Amazon.com Inc (Amazon) is an online retailer and web service provider. In 2021, the company reported 13.2% of Asian employees in the US workforce (All Levels), down 0.4 percentage points from 2020. Black & African American and Hispanic & Latinx employees represented 28.2% and 23.6% of the US office, respectively.

In leadership roles at Amazon’s US office, the representation of Asian employees was 21.5%. Black employees represented 5.5% and Hispanic & Latinx employees at 4.5% at senior levels in the US workforce in 2021.

To increase the representation of Black employees and women in Amazon's workforce, the company plans to hire 30% more women for senior technology roles and double the number of Black executives.  Additionally, Amazon plans to hire 30% more Black employees to work as product managers, engineers, designers, and in other corporate roles.
