Dollar Tree Inc is a leading operator of discount variety stores in the US and Canada. Its stores operate under the brand names Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and Dollar Tree Canada. It is ranked 137 on the Fortune 500 list with its iconic brands delivering value and convenience through complementary businesses. As of FY2021, it operated 16,077 discount variety retail stores adding 392 stores across 48 states and five Canadian provinces during the year.
It conducts its operations through two reporting business segments: Dollar Tree and Family Dollar. At the end of FY2021, it had a total store count of 16,077 stores. It had 8,061 stores operating under Dollar Tree and 8,061 stores under the Family Dollar segment.
The Dollar Tree segment includes stores operating under the Dollar Tree and Dollar Tree Canada brands, 15 distribution centers in the United States, and two in Canada. The merchandise consists of consumable merchandise, a variety of merchandise, and seasonal goods.
The Family Dollar stores sell merchandise at prices that generally range from $1 to $10. The store size predominantly ranges from 6,000 - 8,000 selling square feet. The Family Dollar segment consists of store operations under the Family Dollar brand and 11 distribution centers.
As of FY2021, the company opened 590 new stores, comprising 400 Family Dollar and 190 Dollar Tree stores. It renovated 800 Family Dollar stores into the H2 format and added or replaced frozen and refrigerated capability to select stores. The H2 stores have an improved merchandise offering. At the end of the year, more than 240 Combo Stores were added and the company plans to add another 400 in FY2022.
Enterprise comparable store net sales increased by 1% in FY2021, as a result of a 4.5% increase in average tickets and a 3.3% decrease in customer traffic. The increase in net sales in FY2021 YoY was a result of sales of $703.4 million at new stores and a comparable store net sales increase in the Dollar Tree segment, partially offset by a net decrease in sales in the current year from stores closed in FY2021.
