Aeon Company (Aeon) Group’s reportable segments are: The GMS Business includes general merchandise stores (GMS), and specialty stores, the SM Business includes supermarkets, convenience stores, and small-scale supermarkets, the DS Business includes discount stores, the Health and Wellness Business includes drugstores and pharmacies and the Financial Services Business includes credit card, fee, and banking businesses.
In FY2021, the GMS Business’s operating revenue was down by 1.8% YoY. During the year Aeon Retail worked to improve the precision of their control of the merchandising cycle and was able to significantly improve same-store inventory volume and turnover. Aeon Retail expanded brands such as Sporsium, Esseme, and SELF+SERVICE in high growth-potential fields in the non-food category and food category as well. In the GMS Business, the Group opened 6 new stores and closed 9 existing stores, while renovating existing stores to suit the local demographics of each neighborhood.
In the Supermarket Business and the Discount Store Business, the Group opened 53 new supermarkets and closed 17 existing stores in the Supermarket Business and opened 11 new discount stores and closed 6 existing stores in the Discount Store Business. The Group continued to aggressively opened small-size urban My Basket stores, bringing the total to 1,000 outlets at the end of FY2021.
The Health and Wellness Business’s operating revenue was up by 7.8% YoY. At Welcia Holdings and its consolidated subsidiaries, sales of prescription drugs increased significantly by 14.4% year on year in FY2021 due to a continued increase in the number of prescriptions handled as a result of the increase in the number of stores dispensing prescription drugs (1,844 stores as of February 28, 2022). Welcia Holdings opened 144 new stores and added 133 stores by acquiring shares and acquiring businesses and closed 26 stores.
In Japan, Aeon Mall opened four new malls and both expanded and refurbished one mall during the year, which was not impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the ASEAN business, business was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in each country where Aeon Mall operates, but the total number of malls increased to 11 as of the end of February 2022. In FY2021, Aeon Mall and its consolidated companies opened 4 new shopping centers and refurbished 10 existing shopping centers in Japan. In overseas business, Aeon opened 2 new shopping centers.
Through labor-saving measures and customer-oriented management, the company’s group management, in China, which is positioned as the company’s largest growth area in Asia, under AEON DELIGHT (China), a controlling company established in April 2021, the core operating companies are focusing on increasing contracts from the priority targets, which include mid- and high-end shopping centers, hospitals, nursing homes, and redevelopment areas.
