Fording River Mine in British Columbia, was the largest coal-producing mine in Canada, producing approximately 8.4 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 8.7 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Fording River Mine is owned by Teck Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2059. The second largest coal-producing mine with an estimated coal production of 7.9 million tonnes and an estimated 8.56 mmtpa of ROM, was the Elkview Mine located in British Columbia. The Elkview Mine is owned by Teck Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2051.
Vista Project located in Alberta was the third-largest mine, the Greenhills Mine located in British Columbia was the fourth-largest mine, and the Estevan Mine located in Saskatchewan was the fifth-largest mine, with a total coal production of 5.3 million tonnes, 4.8 million tonnes and 4.3 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Vista Project, the Greenhills Mine and the Estevan Mine had an estimated ROM production of 2 mmtpa, 5.66 mmtpa and 5.72 mmtpa respectively. The Vista Project is owned by KC Euroholdings S.a r.l. which is due to operate until 2046, the Greenhills Mine is owned by Teck Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2061 and the Estevan Mine is owned by Westmoreland Mining Holding LLC which is due to operate until 2030.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Fording River Mine, Elkview Mine, Vista Project, Greenhills Mine, and Estevan Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 30.7 million tonnes of coal, 30.64 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
