Highland Valley Copper Mine in British Columbia, was the largest copper-producing mine in Canada, producing approximately 130.5 thousand tonnes of copper and an estimated 59.2 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Highland Valley Copper Mine is owned by Teck Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2040. The second largest copper-producing mine with an estimated copper production of 56.7 thousand tonnes and an estimated 28.41 mmtpa of ROM, was the Gibraltar Mine located in British Columbia. The Gibraltar Mine is owned by Taseko Mines Ltd, and is due to operate until 2039.
Copper Mountain Mine located in British Columbia was the third-largest mine, the Mount Milligan Mine located in British Columbia was the fourth-largest mine, and the Red Chris Mine located in British Columbia was the fifth-largest mine, with a total copper production of 40.9 thousand tonnes, 39.4 thousand tonnes and 33.1 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Copper Mountain Mine, the Mount Milligan Mine and the Red Chris Mine had an estimated ROM production of 21.96 mmtpa, 15.17 mmtpa and 4.62 mmtpa respectively. The Copper Mountain Mine is owned by Copper Mountain Mining Corp which is due to operate until 2051, the Mount Milligan Mine is owned by Centerra Gold Inc which is due to operate until 2030 and the Red Chris Mine is owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd which is due to operate until 2043.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Highland Valley Copper Mine, Gibraltar Mine, Copper Mountain Mine, Mount Milligan Mine, and Red Chris Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 300.6 thousand tonnes of copper, 129.38 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
