Hongsa Mine in Xaignabouli, was the largest surface mine in Lao People's Democratic Republic, producing approximately 12.76 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Hongsa Mine is owned by RATCH Group PCL;Lao Holding State Enterprise;Banpu PCL, and is due to operate until 2042. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 8.76 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing magnesium (36.08 thousand tonnes), was the Phu Kham Mine located in Vientiane. The Phu Kham Mine is owned by Government Of Lao People's Democratic Republic;Guangdong Rising Assets Management Co Ltd, and is due to operate until 2023.
KSO Gold Mine located in Vientiane was the third-largest mine, the Ban Houayxai Mine located in Vientiane was the fourth-largest mine, and the Phonesack Coal Mine located in Sekong was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 2.78 mmtpa, 2.59 mmtpa and 0.22 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The KSO Gold Mine is owned by Phonesack Group Ltd, the Ban Houayxai Mine is owned by Guangdong Rising Assets Management Co Ltd and the Phonesack Coal Mine is owned by Phonesack Group Ltd.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Hongsa Mine, Phu Kham Mine, KSO Gold Mine, Ban Houayxai Mine, and Phonesack Coal Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 27.11 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
