Bogatyr Komir Mine in Pavlodar, was the largest surface mine in Kazakhstan, producing approximately 55.95 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Bogatyr Komir Mine is owned by Samruk-Energy;United Company RUSAL Plc. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 54.94 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing magnesium (136.4 thousand tonnes), was the Aktogay Project located in East Kazakhstan. The Aktogay Project is owned by KAZ Minerals PLC, and is due to operate until 2045.
Bozshakol Mine located in Pavlodar was the third-largest mine, the Vostochny Mine located in Pavlodar was the fourth-largest mine, and the Shubarkol Mine located in Karagandy was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 27.47 mmtpa, 20.52 mmtpa and 11.67 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Bozshakol Mine is owned by KAZ Minerals PLC which is due to operate until 2061, the Vostochny Mine is owned by Eurasian Resources Group Sarl which is due to operate until 2047 and the Shubarkol Mine is owned by Eurasian Resources Group Sarl which is due to operate until 2051.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Bogatyr Komir Mine, Aktogay Project, Bozshakol Mine, Vostochny Mine, and Shubarkol Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 170.56 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
