Bogatyr Komir Mine in Pavlodar, was the largest surface coal-producing mine in Kazakhstan, producing approximately 44.6 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 55.95 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Bogatyr Komir Mine is owned by Samruk-Energy. The second largest surface coal-producing mine with an estimated production of 15.6 million tonnes of coal and approximately 20.52 mmtpa of ROM, was the Vostochny Mine located in Pavlodar. The Vostochny Mine is owned by Eurasian Resources Group Sarl, and is due to operate until 2046.
Shubarkol Mine located in Karagandy was the third-largest mine, the Severny Coal Mine located in Pavlodar was the fourth-largest mine, and the Zhalyn Mine located in Karagandy was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated coal production of 8.4 million tonnes, 6.3 million tonnes and 2 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Shubarkol Mine, the Severny Coal Mine and the Zhalyn Mine had an estimated ROM production of 11.67 mmtpa, 8.35 mmtpa and 2.64 mmtpa respectively. The Shubarkol Mine is owned by Eurasian Resources Group Sarlwhich is due to operate until 2050, the Severny Coal Mine is owned by United Company RUSAL Plc and the Zhalyn Mine is owned by Coal Mining Corporation Ltd.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Bogatyr Komir Mine, Vostochny Mine, Shubarkol Mine, Severny Coal Mine, and Zhalyn Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 76.9 million tonnes of coal, 99.13 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
