Altyntau Kokshetau Mine in Akmola, was the largest surface gold-producing mine in Kazakhstan, producing approximately 389.9 thousand ounces of gold and an estimated 8 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Altyntau Kokshetau Mine is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2030. The second largest surface gold-producing mine with an estimated production of 360 thousand ounces of gold and approximately 2.18 mmtpa of ROM, was the Kyzyl Project located in East Kazakhstan. The Kyzyl Project is owned by Polymetal International Plc, and is due to operate until 2050.
Varvara Mine located in Kostanay was the third-largest mine, the Bozshakol Mine located in Pavlodar was the fourth-largest mine, and the Pustynnoe Mine located in Karagandy was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated gold production of 197 thousand ounces, 112.8 thousand ounces and 103.5 thousand ounces, respectively, in 2021. The Varvara Mine, the Bozshakol Mine and the Pustynnoe Mine had an estimated ROM production of 3.62 mmtpa, 27.47 mmtpa and 2.16 mmtpa respectively. The Varvara Mine is owned by Polymetal International Plcwhich is due to operate until 2035, the Bozshakol Mine is owned by KAZ Minerals PLC which is due to operate until 2060 and the Pustynnoe Mine is owned by AK Altynalmas JSC which is due to operate until 2024.
The five largest gold mines, i.e., Altyntau Kokshetau Mine, Kyzyl Project, Varvara Mine, Bozshakol Mine, and Pustynnoe Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 1,163.2 thousand ounces of gold, 43.43 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
