Buenavista del Cobre Mine in Sonora, was the largest copper-producing mine in Mexico, producing approximately 327.3 thousand tonnes of copper and an estimated 73.4 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Buenavista del Cobre Mine is owned by Grupo Mexico SAB de CV. The second largest copper-producing mine with an estimated copper production of 106.5 thousand tonnes and an estimated 35.83 mmtpa of ROM, was the La Caridad Mine located in Sonora. The La Caridad Mine is owned by Grupo Mexico SAB de CV.
Piedras Verdes Mine located in Sonora was the third-largest mine, the Cozamin Mine located in Zacatecas was the fourth-largest mine, and the Tayahua Mine located in Zacatecas was the fifth-largest mine, with a total copper production of 27.2 thousand tonnes, 24.4 thousand tonnes and 23.1 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Piedras Verdes Mine, the Cozamin Mine and the Tayahua Mine had an estimated ROM production of 7.61 mmtpa, 1.36 mmtpa and 1.15 mmtpa respectively. The Piedras Verdes Mine is owned by Invecture Group, S.A. de C.V. which is due to operate until 2031, the Cozamin Mine is owned by Capstone Copper Corp which is due to operate until 2031 and the Tayahua Mine is owned by Minera Frisco SAB de CV.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Buenavista del Cobre Mine, La Caridad Mine, Piedras Verdes Mine, Cozamin Mine, and Tayahua Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 508.5 thousand tonnes of copper, 119.30 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
