Buenavista del Cobre Mine in Sonora, was the largest surface mine in Mexico, producing approximately 73.35 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (327.33 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Buenavista del Cobre Mine is owned by Grupo Mexico SAB de CV. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 35.91 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (214.32 thousand tonnes), was the Penasquito Mine located in Zacatecas. The Penasquito Mine is owned by Newmont Corp, and is due to operate until 2033.
La Caridad Mine located in Sonora was the third-largest mine, the Herradura Mine located in Sonora was the fourth-largest mine, and the El Coronel Mine located in Zacatecas was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 35.83 mmtpa, 22.7 mmtpa and 15 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the La Caridad Mine produced approximately 106.52 thousand tonnes of copper, the Herradura Mine produced approximately 1,009.33 thousand ounces of silver, and the El Coronel Mine produced approximately 118.94 thousand ounces of gold in the year 2021. The La Caridad Mine is owned by Grupo Mexico SAB de CV, the Herradura Mine is owned by Industrias Penoles SAB de CV which is due to operate until 2035 and the El Coronel Mine is owned by Minera Frisco SAB de CV.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Buenavista del Cobre Mine, Penasquito Mine, La Caridad Mine, Herradura Mine, and El Coronel Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 182.79 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
