Penasquito Mine in Zacatecas, was the largest gold-producing mine in Mexico, producing approximately 693.3 thousand ounces of gold and an estimated 35.9 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Penasquito Mine is owned by Newmont Corp, and is due to operate until 2032. The second largest gold-producing mine with an estimated gold production of 469.8 thousand ounces and an estimated 22.7 mmtpa of ROM, was the Herradura Mine located in Zacatecas. The Herradura Mine is owned by Industrias Penoles SAB de CV, and is due to operate until 2034.
El Limon-Guajes Project located in Guerrero was the third-largest mine, the Dolores Mine located in Chihuahua was the fourth-largest mine, and the Santana Project located in Sonora was the fifth-largest mine, with a total gold production of 450 thousand ounces, 170.1 thousand ounces and 133.2 thousand ounces, respectively, in 2021. The El Limon-Guajes Project, the Dolores Mine and the Santana Project had an estimated ROM production of 5.49 mmtpa, 7.96 mmtpa and 0.78 mmtpa respectively. The El Limon-Guajes Project is owned by Torex Gold Resources Inc which is due to operate until 2024, the Dolores Mine is owned by Pan American Silver Corp which is due to operate until 2025 and the Santana Project is owned by Minera Alamos Inc.
The five largest gold mines, i.e., Penasquito Mine, Herradura Mine, El Limon-Guajes Project, Dolores Mine, and Santana Project, cumulatively produced approximately 1,916.4 thousand ounces of gold, 72.84 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
