Penasquito Mine in Zacatecas, was the largest silver-producing mine in Mexico, producing approximately 31,375 thousand ounces of silver and an estimated 35.9 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Penasquito Mine is owned by Newmont Corp, and is due to operate until 2032. The second largest silver-producing mine with an estimated silver production of 16,772 thousand ounces and an estimated 0.64 mmtpa of ROM, was the San Julian Project located in Zacatecas. The San Julian Project is owned by Industrias Penoles SAB de CV, and is due to operate until 2024.
Santa Elena Mine (Mexus Gold) located in Sonora was the third-largest mine, the Saucito Mine located in Zacatecas was the fourth-largest mine, and the Fresnillo Mine located in Zacatecas was the fifth-largest mine, with a total silver production of 14,812 thousand ounces, 12,439 thousand ounces and 11,986 thousand ounces, respectively, in 2021. The Santa Elena Mine (Mexus Gold), the Saucito Mine and the Fresnillo Mine had an estimated ROM production of 3.22 mmtpa, 2.62 mmtpa and 1.96 mmtpa respectively. The Santa Elena Mine (Mexus Gold) is owned by Mexus Gold U.S., the Saucito Mine is owned by Industrias Penoles SAB de CV which is due to operate until 2025 and the Fresnillo Mine is owned by Industrias Penoles SAB de CV which is due to operate until 2027.
The five largest silver mines, i.e., Penasquito Mine, San Julian Project, Santa Elena Mine (Mexus Gold), Saucito Mine, and Fresnillo Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 87,384 thousand ounces of silver, 44.35 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
