The second largest coal-producing mine with an estimated coal production of 9.3 million tonnes and 9.3 mmtpa of ROM, was the Syferfontein Mine located in Limpopo, South Africa. The Syferfontein Mine is owned by Sasol Ltd.
Kriel Mine located in Mpumalanga , South Africa was the third-largest mine, the Zibulo Mine located in Mpumalanga , South Africa was the fourth-largest mine and the Tweefontein Division Mines located in Mpumalanga , South Africa was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated coal production of 9.1 million tonnes, 7.5 million tonnes and 6.7 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Kriel Mine, the Zibulo Mine and the Tweefontein Division Mines had an estimated ROM production of 11.71 mmtpa, 10.14 mmtpa and 8.86 mmtpa respectively. The Kriel Mine is owned by Seriti Resources Holdings Pty Ltd which is due to operate until 2035, the Zibulo Mine is owned by Thungela Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2029 and the Tweefontein Division Mines is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2033.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Grootegeluk Mine, Syferfontein Mine, Kriel Mine, Zibulo Mine, and Tweefontein Division Mines, cumulatively produced approximately 59.5 million tonnes of coal, 97.69 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
