Kriel Mine in Mpumalanga , South Africa, was the largest surface and underground coal-producing mine in the Middle East and Africa region, producing approximately 9.1 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 11.71 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Kriel Mine is owned by Seriti Resources Holdings Pty Ltd, and is due to operate until 2035. The second largest surface and underground coal-producing mine with an estimated production of 7.5 million tonnes of coal and approximately 10.14 mmtpa of ROM, was the Zibulo Mine located in Mpumalanga , South Africa. The Zibulo Mine is owned by Thungela Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2029.
Tweefontein Division Mines located in Mpumalanga , South Africa was the third-largest mine, the Mines Of Izimbiwa Coal located in Mpumalanga , South Africa was the fourth-largest mine, and the Goedehoop Mine located in Mpumalanga , South Africa was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated coal production of 6.7 million tonnes, 5.8 million tonnes and 5.2 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Tweefontein Division Mines, the Mines Of Izimbiwa Coal and the Goedehoop Mine had an estimated ROM production of 8.86 mmtpa, 7.68 mmtpa and 4.4 mmtpa respectively. The Tweefontein Division Mines is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2033, the Mines Of Izimbiwa Coal is owned by Phembani Group which is due to operate until 2024 and the Goedehoop Mine is owned by Thungela Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2033.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Kriel Mine, Zibulo Mine, Tweefontein Division Mines, Mines Of Izimbiwa Coal, and Goedehoop Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 34.3 million tonnes of coal, 42.79 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
