Ulan West Mine in New South Wales, Australia, was the largest underground coal-producing mine in the Oceania region, producing approximately 6.7 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 6.92 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Ulan West Mine is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2032. The second largest underground coal-producing mine with an estimated production of 5.6 million tonnes of coal and approximately 5.84 mmtpa of ROM, was the Ulan Coal Underground Mine located in New South Wales, Australia. The Ulan Coal Underground Mine is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2030.
Kestrel Mine located in Queensland, Australia was the third-largest mine, the Broadmeadow Mine located in Queensland, Australia was the fourth-largest mine, and the Moranbah North Mine located in Queensland, Australia was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated coal production of 5.3 million tonnes, 5.1 million tonnes and 4.4 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Kestrel Mine, the Broadmeadow Mine and the Moranbah North Mine had an estimated ROM production of 7.48 mmtpa, 6.84 mmtpa and 5.85 mmtpa respectively. The Kestrel Mine is owned by EMR Capital Group which is due to operate until 2054, the Broadmeadow Mine is owned by BHP which is due to operate until 2056 and the Moranbah North Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc which is due to operate until 2054.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Ulan West Mine, Ulan Coal Underground Mine, Kestrel Mine, Broadmeadow Mine, and Moranbah North Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 27.1 million tonnes of coal, 32.93 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
