Grootegeluk Mine in Limpopo, was the largest coal-producing mine in South Africa, producing approximately 26.9 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 57.7 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Grootegeluk Mine is owned by Exxaro Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2041. The second largest coal-producing mine with an estimated coal production of 18.5 million tonnes and an estimated 21.63 mmtpa of ROM, was the New Vaal Mine located in Limpopo. The New Vaal Mine is owned by Seriti Resources Holdings Pty Ltd, and is due to operate until 2039.
Wolvekrans Middelburg Complex Mine located in Mpumalanga was the third-largest mine, the Syferfontein Mine located in Gauteng was the fourth-largest mine, and the Kriel Mine located in Mpumalanga was the fifth-largest mine, with a total coal production of 11.3 million tonnes, 9.3 million tonnes and 9.1 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Wolvekrans Middelburg Complex Mine, the Syferfontein Mine and the Kriel Mine had an estimated ROM production of 14.54 mmtpa, 9.3 mmtpa and 11.71 mmtpa respectively. The Wolvekrans Middelburg Complex Mine is owned by Seriti Resources Holdings Pty Ltd which is due to operate until 2034, the Syferfontein Mine is owned by Sasol Ltd and the Kriel Mine is owned by Seriti Resources Holdings Pty Ltd which is due to operate until 2035.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Grootegeluk Mine, New Vaal Mine, Wolvekrans Middelburg Complex Mine, Syferfontein Mine, and Kriel Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 75.1 million tonnes of coal, 114.86 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
