Kloof Gold Mine in Gauteng, was the largest gold-producing mine in South Africa, producing approximately 396 thousand ounces of gold and an estimated 5.6 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Kloof Gold Mine is owned by Sibanye Stillwater Ltd, and is due to operate until 2034. The second largest gold-producing mine with an estimated gold production of 328 thousand ounces and an estimated 1.3 mmtpa of ROM, was the Driefontein Gold Mine located in Gauteng. The Driefontein Gold Mine is owned by Sibanye Stillwater Ltd, and is due to operate until 2030.
South Deep Gold Mine located in Gauteng was the third-largest mine, the Impala Mine located in North West was the fourth-largest mine, and the Tshepong Mine located in Free State was the fifth-largest mine, with a total gold production of 292.6 thousand ounces, 263.5 thousand ounces and 238.5 thousand ounces, respectively, in 2021. The South Deep Gold Mine, the Impala Mine and the Tshepong Mine had an estimated ROM production of 1.54 mmtpa, 8.46 mmtpa and 1.62 mmtpa respectively. The South Deep Gold Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ltd which is due to operate until 2106, the Impala Mine is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd which is due to operate until 2035 and the Tshepong Mine is owned by Harmony Gold Mining Co Ltd which is due to operate until 2041.
The five largest gold mines, i.e., Kloof Gold Mine, Driefontein Gold Mine, South Deep Gold Mine, Impala Mine, and Tshepong Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 1,518.6 thousand ounces of gold, 18.53 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
