Kriel Mine in Mpumalanga, was the largest surface and underground mine in South Africa, producing approximately 11.71 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Kriel Mine is owned by Seriti Resources Holdings Pty Ltd, and is due to operate until 2035. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 10.14 mmtpa of ROM, was the Zibulo Mine located in Mpumalanga. The Zibulo Mine is owned by Thungela Resources Ltd;Inyosi Consortium, and is due to operate until 2029.
Marikana Mine (Lonmin) located in North West was the third-largest mine, the Tweefontein Division Mines located in Mpumalanga was the fourth-largest mine, and the Palabora Mine located in Limpopo was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 10 mmtpa, 8.86 mmtpa and 8.59 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Marikana Mine (Lonmin) is owned by Sibanye Stillwater Ltd which is due to operate until 2037, the Tweefontein Division Mines is owned by Glencore Plc;African Rainbow Minerals Ltd which is due to operate until 2034 and the Palabora Mine is owned by HBIS Group Co Ltd;General Nice Development, Ltd.;Tewoo Group Co., Ltd.;China Africa Development Fund;Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Ltd which is due to operate until 2040.
The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., Kriel Mine, Zibulo Mine, Marikana Mine (Lonmin), Tweefontein Division Mines, and Palabora Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 49.29 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
