Amazon’s net sales amounted to nearly $470 billion in 2021, a growth of nearly 22% as compared to the net sales of $386 billion in 2020. Amazon evaluates its business performance and manages its operations based on these three segments: North America, International, and AWS (Amazon Web Services). In 2021, Amazon’s North America segment reported net sales of $279.9 billion, the International segment made $127.8 billion of net sales and $62 billion in net sales from the AWS segment.
Beginning in the first quarter of 2015, Amazon started reporting the net sales made by Amazon Web Services (AWS) separately, nearly ten years after the AWS was founded.
North America: The North America segment primarily consists of revenue earned from retail sales of consumer products (including from sellers) and subscriptions through North America-focused online and physical stores. This segment includes export sales from these online stores. Until the fiscal year 2014, the net sales from the AWS segment were included in the North America segment.
International: The International segment primarily consists of amounts earned from retail sales of consumer products (including from sellers) and subscriptions through internationally-focused online stores. This segment includes export sales from these internationally-focused online stores (including export sales from these online stores to customers in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada), but excludes export sales from our North America-focused online stores.
AWS: The AWS (Amazon Web Services) segment consists of amounts earned from global sales of compute, storage, database, and other services for start-ups, enterprises, government agencies, and academic institutions.
