Overview of Etsy’s GMS:
On a currency-neutral basis, Etsy's consolidated GMS came in at $13.5 billion (2021), up roughly 30% from the previous year (2020). Despite having sellers and buyers from all over the world, Etsy identifies seven countries (United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Australia, France, and India) as its core geographies and defines them as areas with the best possibilities for gross merchandise sales (GMS). In 2021, approximately 42% of Etsy's consolidated GMS was generated when a seller or buyer, or both, were located outside of the United States. Active sellers on the Etsy marketplace increased by 28% for the entire year and more than doubled over the previous two years. More importantly, throughout consecutive platform years, its seller groups retain more GMS.
Etsy considers GMS as one of its key performance criteria because it reflects the success of Etsy sellers, the satisfaction of Etsy shoppers, the health of their ecosystem, and the scale and growth of the business. In order to accurately reflect the success of the company, Etsy continued to employ GMS, revenue, and adjusted EBITDA margin for its yearly cash incentive program beginning in 2020.
Gross merchandise sales (GMS) on its marketplace reached $13.5 billion in 2021, with mobile apps representing Etsy marketplace's fastest-growing platform, accounting for almost 64% of 2021's consolidated GMS. Etsy concentrated on raising conversion rates generally, but they put a special emphasis on mobile web, which remained the biggest factor of both visits overall and mobile gross merchandise sales growth.
