The Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) for eBay in 2021 amounted to $87.37 billion, a decrease of nearly $240 million as compared to the GMV of $87.61 billion in 2020. eBay generated the majority of its GMV in 2021 from the following product categories: parts & accessories, consumer electronics, and home & garden.

eBay’s transaction take rate in 2021 was 11.19%, which resulted in higher revenues. In 2020, although the GMV was higher as compared to 2021, the transaction take rate was 9.41% resulting in a revenue of $8.24 billion.

In 2021, eBay’s migrated its buyers and sellers to a simplified end-to-end payments platform. In comparison to 2020, net transaction revenues grew by $1.5 billion in 2021, due to higher traffic and buyer acquisition during the first quarter of 2021 offset by a reduction in traffic for the remainder of 2021, although GMV remained stable in 2021 compared to 2020. The broad macroeconomic implications of COVID-19, including mobility constraints that influence consumer engagement in online purchasing, have caused traffic to fluctuate in 2021 and 2020. Improved business conditions encouraged growth across all main product categories in both 2021 and 2020, as compared to 2019. While several categories' GMV growth rates were largely steady in 2021 vs 2020, market trends drove higher contributions from the collectibles category in 2021 versus 2020, particularly in the U.S.

GMV consists of the total value of all paid transactions between users on eBay during the applicable period inclusive of shipping fees and taxes.

Take rate is defined as net transaction revenues divided by GMV and represents net transaction revenue as a percentage of overall volume on eBay’s platforms.
