Sangatta Mine in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, was the largest surface coal-producing mine in the Asia-Pacific region, producing approximately 49.2 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 51.4 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Sangatta Mine is owned by PT Bumi Resources Tbk. The second largest surface coal-producing mine with an estimated production of 47.1 million tonnes of coal and approximately 49.04 mmtpa of ROM, was the Gevra OC Mine located in Chhattisgarh, Indonesia. The Gevra OC Mine is owned by Coal India Ltd, and is due to operate until 2028.
Pasir Mine located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia was the third-largest mine, the Heidaigou Mine located in Inner Mongolia, China was the fourth-largest mine, and the FTB Project located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated coal production of 35.7 million tonnes, 32.3 million tonnes and 30.9 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Pasir Mine, the Heidaigou Mine and the FTB Project had an estimated ROM production of 35.18 mmtpa, 33.63 mmtpa and 31.11 mmtpa respectively. The Pasir Mine is owned by PT Indika Energy Tbk, the Heidaigou Mine is owned by China Shenhua Energy Co Ltd which is due to operate until 2030 and the FTB Project is owned by PT Bayan Resources Tbk.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Sangatta Mine, Gevra OC Mine, Pasir Mine, Heidaigou Mine, and FTB Project, cumulatively produced approximately 195.2 million tonnes of coal, 200.36 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
