Green Mine in Sichuan, China, was the largest surface mine in Asia-Pacific, producing approximately 62.24 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Green Mine is owned by Sichuan Lomon Corp. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 51.4 mmtpa of ROM, was the Sangatta Mine located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The Sangatta Mine is owned by The Tata Power Co Ltd;PT Bumi Resources Tbk;Mountain Netherlands Investment BV.
Gevra OC Mine located in Chhattisgarh, India was the third-largest mine, the Oyu Tolgoi Copper-Gold Mine located in Omnogovi, Mongolia was the fourth-largest mine, and the Letpadaung Copper Mine located in Sagaing, Myanmar was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 49.04 mmtpa, 43.11 mmtpa and 36.92 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Gevra OC Mine is owned by Coal India Ltd which is due to operate until 2029, the Oyu Tolgoi Copper-Gold Mine is owned by Rio Tinto;Government of Mongolia which is due to operate until 2052 and the Letpadaung Copper Mine is owned by Wanbao Mining Co Ltd which is due to operate until 2051.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Green Mine, Sangatta Mine, Gevra OC Mine, Oyu Tolgoi Copper-Gold Mine, and Letpadaung Copper Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 242.71 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
