Canada: Five Largest Surface Iron Ore Mines in 2021

  • Mont Wright Mine in Quebec, was the largest surface iron ore-producing mine in Canada, producing approximately 22 million tonnes of iron ore and an estimated 65.6 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Mont Wright Mine is owned by ArcelorMittal SA, and is due to operate until 2052. The second largest surface iron ore-producing mine with an estimated production of 16.6 million tonnes of iron ore and approximately 25.22 mmtpa of ROM, was the Carol Lake Mine located in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Carol Lake Mine is owned by Rio Tinto, and is due to operate until 2081.
