Canada: Five Largest Surface Mines in 2021

  • Millennium Oil Sands Project in Alberta, was the largest surface mine in Canada, producing approximately 260.32 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Millennium Oil Sands Project is owned by Suncor Energy Inc, and is due to operate until 2034. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 204.01 mmtpa of ROM, was the Horizon Project located in Alberta. The Horizon Project is owned by Canadian Natural Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2068.

  • Steepbank Project located in Alberta was the third-largest mine, the Muskeg River Project located in Alberta was the fourth-largest mine, and the Syncrude Project located in Alberta was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 153.04 mmtpa, 141.09 mmtpa and 120.18 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Steepbank Project is owned by Suncor Energy Inc, the Muskeg River Project is owned by Shell plc;Chevron Canada Ltd;Canadian Natural Resources Ltd and the Syncrude Project is owned by Sinopec Oil Sands Partnership;Suncor Energy Inc;Imperial Oil Ltd;CNOOC Ltd.

  • The five largest surface mines, i.e., Millennium Oil Sands Project, Horizon Project, Steepbank Project, Muskeg River Project, and Syncrude Project, cumulatively produced approximately 120.18 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
