Canada: Five Largest Underground Mines in 2021

  • Rocanville Mine in Saskatchewan, was the largest underground mine in Canada, producing approximately 16.64 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Rocanville Mine is owned by Nutrien Ltd, and is due to operate until 2051. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 9.22 mmtpa of ROM, was the Lanigan Mine located in Saskatchewan. The Lanigan Mine is owned by Nutrien Ltd, and is due to operate until 2098.

  • Allan Mine located in Saskatchewan was the third-largest mine, the Goderich Mine located in Ontario was the fourth-largest mine, and the Cory Mine located in Saskatchewan was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 7.74 mmtpa, 6.91 mmtpa and 5.77 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Allan Mine is owned by Nutrien Ltd which is due to operate until 2070, the Goderich Mine is owned by Compass Minerals International Inc which is due to operate until 2104 and the Cory Mine is owned by Nutrien Ltd which is due to operate until 2067.

  • The five largest underground mines, i.e., Rocanville Mine, Lanigan Mine, Allan Mine, Goderich Mine, and Cory Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 46.28 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
