Lalor Mine in Manitoba, was the largest zinc-producing mine in Canada, producing approximately 76.1 thousand tonnes of zinc and an estimated 1.6 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Lalor Mine is owned by Hudbay Minerals Inc, and is due to operate until 2031. The second largest zinc-producing mine with an estimated zinc production of 48.7 thousand tonnes and an estimated 2.25 mmtpa of ROM, was the Kidd Creek Mine located in Manitoba. The Kidd Creek Mine is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2023.
777 Mine located in Manitoba was the third-largest mine, the Caribou Zinc-Lead-Silver Mine located in New Brunswick was the fourth-largest mine, and the LaRonde Mine located in Quebec was the fifth-largest mine, with a total zinc production of 32.8 thousand tonnes, 18.6 thousand tonnes and 8.8 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The 777 Mine, the Caribou Zinc-Lead-Silver Mine and the LaRonde Mine had an estimated ROM production of 1.05 mmtpa, 0.52 mmtpa and 1.91 mmtpa respectively. The 777 Mine is owned by Hudbay Minerals Inc which is due to operate until 2026, the Caribou Zinc-Lead-Silver Mine is owned by Trevali Mining Corporation which is due to operate until 2024 and the LaRonde Mine is owned by Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd which is due to operate until 2030.
The five largest zinc mines, i.e., Lalor Mine, Kidd Creek Mine, 777 Mine, Caribou Zinc-Lead-Silver Mine, and LaRonde Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 185 thousand tonnes of zinc, 7.36 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
